It is a colorless, transparent,high-octane liquid with an odor characteristic of ethers.
MTBE has good miscibility with gasoline and is an ideal blending component for the production of lead-free, high-octane, oxygen-containing gasoline, has been widely used as a gasoline additive.
MTBE is an ether compound formed by connecting a methyl group (-CH₃) and a tert-butyl group ((CH₃)₃C-) via an oxygen atom.
High Octane Rating: Its molecular structure gives it a high Research Octane Number (RON ≈ 118), effectively enhancing the anti-knock performance of gasoline.
Good Miscibility: It is miscible with gasoline and many organic solvents but only slightly soluble in water.
Stability: It exhibits relatively stable chemical properties.
Safety and Storage
Highly Flammable: Both the liquid and its vapor are extremely flammable.
Irritant: It can irritate the eyes, skin, and respiratory tract. Inhalation of high concentrations of vapor may cause central nervous system depression (dizziness, drowsiness).
Environmental Hazard: Harmful to aquatic organisms.
Storage: Must be sealed and stored in a cool, well-ventilated area, away from open flames, heat sources, and oxidizers.
